Episode 45: Ore Ida Bagel Bites vs. Totino’s Pizza Rolls Frodown

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

When it comes to bite-sized mini novelty pizza items you can’t get more brilliant than pizza pockets. That is of course, unless you are talking about mini pizza bagels. So who would be tops in the mind and mouth of the Frozen Food Master? It is another epic frodown today with Ore Ida Bagel Bites versus Totino’s Pizza Rolls.

Although it is a given that both are brilliant when cooked in the oven, I decided to take them both down to a more low class level by comparing them head to head out of the microwave. Who will win this frodown?

this was unfair.
1. YOU-you burned the cheese – it said melted not turned to lava, so you could have seen the melt going bad, and rotated the pan or stopped sooner. they didn’t burn it.

2. you ate 3 pizza rolls and only one bagel bite. didn’t show us if all were burned or only the one you picked and don’t know if they were uniformly bad,
sure -the size of 3 pizza rolls equals one bagel bite, but you might have gotten one 1/2 empty pizza roll as i have…

so in fairness you have to show that the complaint is pertinent to all of them.

also. the one bagel bite was upside down for marketing to show the consumer the bagel, so not fair to give them a digg for that

Thanks for your comment! I beg to differ. That was not unfair.

As I do for all my reviews I follow the directions and reduce myself to the lowest common denominator. I cooked it at the minimum time listed on the directions (and the cheese was more than melted). Also I couldn’t bear to eat another bagel bite. It was not cooked evenly. Finally, I am suspect of the statement that they show one upside down for marketing purposes. I don’t need a visual confirmation that it is a bagel on the other side of the toppings.

The bottom line is both rock. Pizza Rolls just rocked a little better this time. I am planning on doing a rematch but both in the oven. We shall see what happens to the results then.

See! I told you…you’ve only got a small window in which to enjoy the Bagel Bite. Great Frodown, very informative and I think the results were both fair and correct.

This just screams for a fro-down rematch! The way it should be done, down and dirty in confines of the squared circle that is the oven!

I, too, feel the Bagel Bites were slighted and you quite possibly came into this fro-down with some preconceived bias and preference.

The Bagel Bites played the role of the Raiders in the infamous Snow Bowl at Foxboro. Although that outcome was awesome, Bagel Bites deserve a chance to shine!

Ah man EPIC battle needs a oven rematch. Would have like to hear more about the nutritional facts but I guess you ain’t a nutritionist, so it is fine. However I was pulling for Pizza Rolls they are clearly better, since the bread to pizza ration on a Bagel bite is so askew.

Hi Greg, would you consider reviewing Lean Cuisine or Claim Jumpers’ frozen entrees?

Thanks.

Hi Sherry, I have reviewed 2 Lean Cuisine meals already. You can see them here http://www.freezerburns.com/wordpress/tag/lean-cuisine/

I am not familiar with Claim Jumpers but I will look out for them.

I’ve found that Bagel Bites can still be really good in the microwave (and not hard, yet fully cooked) if you take them out when the sauce begins to bubble – even if the cheese hasn’t completely melted. It seems like the square bits of cheese they use take a lot to change shape. It’s kind of like when you’re melting chocolate – it keeps it’s original form but when you touch it it’s real soft. I also think Bagel Bites are significantly less greasy than pizza rolls. Just my two cents.

Pizza Rolls FTW. They are FAR better than Bagel Bites. Good review and a solid conclusion.

Thanks for Steve’s advice on that. I have not had the Bagel Bites yet, but I have had the pizza rolls long ago and I remember them to be pretty good also! :-)

Pizza in the morning, pizza in the evening, pizza at supper time! When pizza is on a bagel you can eat pizza anytime! Bagel Bites win for a better commercial. Pizza Rolls win for better tasting!

I'm so glad that even you, the Frozen Food Master burned the Bagel Bites because it just illustrates how hard those things are to cook properly. I've found either I end up not cooking them enough or they end up being burnt to a crisp.
