The Original SoupMan Seafood Bisque Video Review (Ep57)

The Original SoupMan, other wise known as Al Yeganeh, the real-life inspiration for the Seinfeld Soup Nazi character now sells his world-renowned soups in the freezer aisle.

I have been battling a cold lately and I figured soup was the best medicine for a congested nose and a sore throat. And I am proud to say that even though I was nervous my lack of consistent airflow to my lungs would limit the way this Original SoupMan Seafood Bisque would taste, my snot was no match for the extreme aroma coming form this bisque.

This tasted like no other seafood bisque I have ever tasted. Certainly worth it to take the legendary abuse from its eccentric chef. No soup for you!

Serving size to me does not me “meal”, it means “serving”. Like when you eat a Thanksgiving dinner you have your servings of green beans, turkey, etc. They are small portions usually, or servings, that add up to a whole meal.

There is some sense behind it. Here’s the wiki on it:

Bear, that is an excellent point. And you are right. If I had a cup of that before a meal, it would have been ample. I guess with a product that legendary and a consistency that rich, I automatically pegged it for a “soup as a meal” type of situation. Good call. Thanks for the link.

I used to live in NYC when Al had his old place. Now I go to the franchise location in Princeton, NJ. They always sell the soup as the centerpiece of the meal–with bread, fruit and this cute little piece of chocolate. I always leave full. Americans eat too much.

Ah, when I was in Ann Arbor we had our own Soup Man. He ran a place on Liberty Street called “Le Dog”.

    Excellent lobster bisque. :-)

By the way, have you looked into getting a wireless lapel mike for these reviews? The video is great, but some of the audio is difficult to follow.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed this review. Thanks!

Thanks Rick. Yes a lapel mic is on my list of things to get. Need to generate some income form the site before I can afford one!

a couple years ago he opened a chain of soupman stores in new york – and I visited one around the corner from my apt. It was the saltiest soup I had ever tasted in my life – like drinking saltwater-laced soup. It was almost inedible. Maybe it was just the persons making/dishing out the soup there, but it was awful. I was quite disappointed. Howevs, this review sure makes my mouth water. You’re a good salesman, Gregory… and as a fellow cold-sufferer at the moment, I wish I had some aromatic soup going in my microwave.

Just finished a whole bowl of the Broccoli Cheddar – must say, quite excellent as well. Bought it on a whim, and was expecting it to just be regular old soup with a fancy (albeit, kind of cornball) branding. Was quite surprised when it had really rich complex flavor… I'll try the bisque next time.
