Episode 60: Pancake Frodown Pillsbury vs Aunt Jemima

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

We have two powerhouses squaring off in honor of National Pancake Week: Pillsbury Buttermilk Pancakes versus Aunt Jemima Buttermilk Pancakes. Both come in packages of 12 and both boast a perfect pancake size only achievable by a machine before flash frozen. But which short stack will come out on top after a minute in the microwave?

I like the coordination of red plate/red box (Aunt Jemima), blue plate/blue box (Pillsbury).

Although I love your regular episodes the Frodowns are my favorite (***NOTE: Just added “frodown” to my spell check dictionary**).

How do these ‘stack-up’ to McDonald’s flapjacks?

I wonder how these would taste cooked in the toaster. One of my favorite breakfasts growing up was Eggo waffles with strawberry jam, topped with cottage cheese…..mmmmm. I would like to try that with these toasted and make a sandwich out of it.

I also used to take an Eggo waffle, toast it, place a slab of butter on top, drizzle with syrup (the fake, sugary type) and throw it in the microwave for about 15 seconds. I liked the softness. Man o man, I can’t eat like that any more…..I wish.

Bear, thanks for noticing the color coordination! To answer your question, no doubt these are way worse than McD’s hot cakes. If these were 3 stars, I rate McD hotcakes at a 6.

I like your suit, very professional, you’re on the job!… =)

I don’t eat frozen pancakes. I eat Eggo cinnamon toast waffles. about 4 at a time! With butter and maple syrup… only on Sundays though, and only with eggs and bacon and/or sausage… & fried hash browns! Those waffles are my good alternative. Good review at the same time… but pancakes are way too simple to be criticized. (In my opinion)

Not a big fan of pancakes myself, but I do enjoy the occasional Mickey Mouse shaped pancake. And yes, people outside of the US do not celebrate “National Pancake Week”. They don’t even eat pancakes.

Chic robe is hot stuff ;-)

Best line of the review – “you have some kids and you are lazy…” LOL.

I have had frozen pancakes before and they really are a major letdown. Just not the same at all. I’m glad to see Aunt Jemima took the victory, though. The dough boy freaks me out a bit.

Great review – but I keep having this feeling that you mixed up the pancakes.

Hey Shane, Are you questioning the Frozen Food Master?! heh heh. Seriously though, is there a reason why you think I may have switched them up? I tried to match the color plates to the box color to avoid that.

I think you mixed them up as well. The Jemima cakes were not quite as round and the same color on both sides before cooking. After cooking the Dough Boy cakes were mishaped and the same color on both sides. Just saying.

[...] Offering variety not just in the foods he reviews but in his review formats, Greg provides 3 different types of shows. From single in-depth reviews to popular one-word quick reviews where he tastes the food on camera and says the first word that comes to mind, to occasional “Frowdowns” (short for “Frozen Food Throwdowns”) where he compares different brands head to head—as he did during National Pancake Week where he compared Aunt Jemima’s frozen pancakes against Pillsbury’s… and aptly did the breakfast segment in a bathrobe. I regularly eat the AJ (too lazy to make real ones). Regularly enough to be able to identify them with a glance. And I have in the past tried Pillsbury. You're right on, Pillsbury was very artificial in flavor and I thought far gummier than AJ. Also, you did mix them up in the beginning of the review. The one you referred to as AJ was Pillsbury. But at the end, when you tasted them, you referred to them correctly.

BTW, they're not gummy if you toast them instead of cooking in the microwave.

The cakes are likely gummy because of how flour acts when you get them mix it with hot water. The effect is the same that thickens gravies.

I liked how the colors matched the box.Cool thing to do to easily identify them.I actually Prefer Aunt Jemima's Cinnamon French Toast. And yes I put them in the toster, not the microwave. And they are really good. You should review those one day if you have the time.
