Episode 70: The Chicken Pot Pie Frodown

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

As a guy that always favors pie over cake, pot pies are the greatest things in the world. Why not stuff meat and veggies into a pie crust and call it a meal? But for some reason, frozen pot pies are the bottom of the frozen food foodchain.

But just like Easy Mac, Hamburger Helper, and Frozen burritos, there may be a time when you crave a chicken pot pie. But which one to get? That’s what the Frozen Food Master is for.

This Chicken Pot Pie Frodown pits Banquet, Swanson, and Marie Callender against each other. Who will prevail?

Even before I finish watching – I am CERTAIN that Marie SHOULD win! But you are NOT going to lose any weight eating the things… Keep bringing it, Greg.

I have NEVER been a fan of chicken pot pies. Your description of the Banquet filling combines with the Swanson crust is how I remember then tasting. I’ve probably only eaten a couple of these in my life. Even the “home cooked” varieties in restaurants (Marie Callender’s for one) don’t look appetizing to me. It just seems like mush….maybe that’s just me. Does anyone eat these on a regular basis?

P.S. Just watched the Facebook exclusive footage. I really like the “comparison shot”. That Swanson’s looks freaky. So Greg…what frozen food conspiracy are you covering up by switching items? :-P

I’ve found that all of the Marie Callender’s frozen meals I’ve tried are pretty good. I’ve never tried the pot pies, though, probably because when I was a kid my mother would get Swanson pot pies which sucked out loud. I’ll definitely check this out though.

Hmmm I always liked the Banquet pot pies better, since I just kind of mash them up. The crust in the Swanson is just so terrible. I never been a fan of pot pies, and if I am eatting them I got with a decent one though so had many of Marie Calenders.

Where’s the nutrition facts? Those Marie Callender’s pot pies are some of the worst things out there in terms of fat and calories and such. They’re especially sneaky with their “half a pot pie is 1 serving” trick.

Predictable (yet good) frodown, but don’t forget the nutrition facts next time!

FYI late in the game–MC now makes different flavors of their turkey and chicken pot pies. I tried the Creamy Chicken Mushroom pie last night. O. M. F. G. It. Was. AWESOME.

I liked Swanny’s golden-olden crust formula(before they went micro.) Then, it was ALL ABOUT removing the errant bits of darko…and incorporating most of the pastry into the rue!

Back in the '80s my momma bought me a freezer full of the banquet and swanson chicken pot pies… for 32 cents a piece I was lovin them! Not so much at a buck. I still love anything in pot pie form.

LOL! Saw that one coming a mile away! I only eat the Marie Callender's chicken pot pies when I need my pot pie fix. I also like shepard's pies, but I havn't had one in such a long time I can't recall a brand.

Awesome site! I just discovered it yesterday. Will be coming back again! :-)
