One Word Review: El Monterey Chicken, Rice, and Beans Burritos
Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master
Just because these burritos come in a bag doesn’t mean it has to be ghetto. You see, it was that low expectation for frozen burritos that put myself in one frame of mind only for it to be snapped in an unexpected and delightful way by this delicious product. Consider me impressed. Rumor has it, El Monterey has been tinkering with their recipes…it shows.

“Great new flavor!”
Does that mean the “old” flavor was not so great?
I know my fam would love this. How many come in the family pack?

I have eaten many an El Monterey burrito over the years. They are not terrible and definitely work in a pinch. I would say the 3 1/2 star assessment is accurate. Rock on man!

Ha! I love being able to guess your word! That said, it looks like that burrito was “bite size”. Did you cut a piece of it, eat most of it, or does it come in that size?

I just bought a bag of these a week or 2 ago. These are pretty tasty but the chicken is similar to other El Monterey chicken products – pressed chicken cut into tiny cubes.

Oh yeah…I love how the picture looks like its packed with rice and chicken, when in reality it’s basically a bean burrito with a small amount of chicken and rice.

Hi Mina, yes, thanks for reminding me: I cut that in half so you could see the inside before I took the bite.

I wonder what they would be like deep fried?

Tell the truth, O Frozen Food Master….
Do you always have the one word in mind before filming or is it always ad libed on the fly? This is sort of like asking if Santa Claus is real or not, but… Are the One-Word Reviews scripted or not?
C’mon, pull that curtain back a little and give us fans some back stage footage…

We’re actually running a contest for El Monterey right now where you can submit ideas about new products, improvements, etc. for a chance to win $500 and get a coupon just for participating. Here’s the link to the survey.

The new means it now has beans. a bit disappointed but glad it’s not otherwise different.

Buyer beware is the watchword for these products. While they are generally acceptable/good in quality and taste, everyone should be aware that Ruiz Foods Inc. has gone down the same path that others have followed in the past few years. Previously the burritos and chimichangas products have been 10 to the package in the family size. Ruiz has seen the “bottom-line” wisdom of reducing the amount of product to 8 in the family pack for the same price. Just be aware that the consumer is once again getting a hosing. It would sure be a solid blow for consumerism if there were a widespread boycott of the El Monterey products until/unless the price is reduced or the number of items is increased back to the prior level.

El Monterey Burritos are awful – they have zero content in them. Nothing like the picture – full of beans and chicken – I would never buy these again!

Can't go wrong with beans rice and a tortilla. Glad they managed to pull this off decently.
