Episode 83: Hot Pockets Supreme Calzone
Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master
It’s simple really: a Hot Pocket Calzone. It’s simple really…if what you are expecting is a Hot Pocket. This isn’t the type of calzone you would expect to get at a pizzeria but it is certainly a sodium-laden crispy, crunchy, amazing frozen food legend.
FreezerBurnsTM is a video review show on a mission to deliver you real reviews and real answers to one of life’s most stressful decisions: choosing the best frozen foods on the planet. Greg is the Frozen Food MasterTM and acts as both food critic and guinea pig. Join him every tuesday and friday as he eats his way through the freezer aisle one box at a time, only on Hungry Nation.

This is off topic, and different, but how about a review of an MRE.

Word!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Greg, thanks for the shout out
That’s too funny, when you mentioned “The Rat” and “The Grampa” I was like “ahhh man”….and then sure enough…Pizza Party (www.pizzapartyonline.com), awesome!!! That is like the ultimate recognition. Oddly enough I just sent you a Pizza Party care package yesterday…was a surprise but oh well.
Great review. I was going to comment on the serving size debate. When you have a regular meal you using either put multiple servings of an item on your plate or go back for seconds, so eating two servings can definately be part of one meal. My mother was all excited for Vitamin Waters new 10 sports drink…until I showed her that there were 2.5 calories per bottle (meaning 25 calories). She got upset and said she felt deceived, even though it clearly states it on the bottle. I tried to explain to her that 10 to 25 calories was a wash but the real point would be that she wouldn’t be consuming the 150-200 calories of a regular “sports drink”. She wasn’t having it….it was already too late and is now anti Vitamin Water.
Have you seen this? http://www.sogoodblog.com/2009/04/14/annoy-charlie-smith/
Its got a funny Hot Pocket bit.
P.S. Do you think you could tweak your comment field at all? This comment is going to look all mashed up I know.
Again….thanks for the shout out, you’re the man!!!

I had one of these once, it is basically an extra large hot pocket.
There’s a reason you can’t get a good calzone for $2.50, it costs money to stuff them full of things. Can’t wait to see their take on a stromboli.

I can’t have a Hot Pocket discussion without someone referring to Jim Gaffigan’s routine about them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9c9lAfXQHs
“Remove from wrapper and place directly in toilet.”
Don’t tell me you’ve never seen it Greg! Keep up the great work!

I like these. Seems like Hot Pocket products are on sale every other week. I’ve picked up this particular calzone a bunch of times.

Greg: I just watched this episode with my son, who is a Hot Pocket fiend. I mentioned Freezerburns to him and asked if you have reviewed any Hot Pockets. He agreed with your whole review. He really liked them, but confirms your 3 star rating. It is about what you would expect from Hot Pockets. He ate both halves (or servings) too.
But the absolute classic moment was when you commented on the photo and hoped that the Calzone was as stuffed full of goodness as the photo. My son looked at me and said, “Doesn't he know that the food is never like the photo on the box?” And a couple sentences later you said almost the exact same thing. Ha-Ha!

Gah! I just stumbled on this page and I see your style of glasses is like mine! No! I’m not original at all!
Anyway, I love pizza products — even the frozen Americanized ones, and it’s so much easier to stick one in the oven/microwave than to spend 2 hours making the dough and another preparing the calzone and baking it!
