Sponsored Review: Twin Hens Chicken Pot Pie
Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master
Organic vegetables, chicken raised without antibiotics, and a flakey crust. Sounds like a super high quality chicken pot pie. But at $28 for a pot pie that serves 4, is this Twin Hens Chicken Pot Pie worth the price?

I follow you on twitter @RobynsWorld and your tweet about this caught my eye so I came and watched. This was my first video I have watched on your blog. While it was very detailed it was honestly really long for a review of a pot pie. I appreciate the details but normally I wouldn’t have watched the entire thing – I stuck with it today because it was my first and I wanted to give it a fair shot. Would love it if you did them a bit shorter – you did make me hungry watching it though!

I have to admit, I balked at the 28 dollar price, especially since I could get one from Big Y for 10. I don’t see any reason I would spend that much on a pot pie for 4 people, especially since I’ve never seen Twin Hens product near my home – and ordering it from their website pushes the cost up to $30 plus next day shipping at 24.45. That’s 54.45 for a pot pie to feed four people.

Well…more power to them for making a good product. I don’t, however, see anyone would spend that much money (and I know most comments will be about price), when you’re able to produce a pie yourself for probably a 1/4 the price and have the satisfaction that you baked it yourself.
Plus…..1 gram of trans fats!?! Do you know how much trans fats you’re supposed to get daily? Zero. Zero trans fats. Anything other that is a no no….even KFC (KFG?) doesn’t use trans fat containing oils any more.
The best use I could see for this is to pawn it off at a gathering as your own cooking
How many people out there have done that? Bought a pre-made or mostly made item and served it to others as your own creation and what was the item?

Twin Hens Pot Pies retail from $5.99 – $7.49 (individual) and $19.99 – $21.99 (large).
I failed to give Greg retail pricing and he quoted Dean and Deluca’s mail order price, which was on our web site. Please e-mail us at info@twinhens.com to find a store near you.
Also, the trans fat in our product is a natural occurring process that results from cooking the chicken. We have since learned that this type of trans fat (which is “good” trans fat) does not have to be listed on a nutrition label and we have removed it from current packaging.

Hey Greg,
I’m not super concerned with all organic food, I mean if it’s organic that’s great, but I don’t go searching for it all the time. With that said, would this pot pie be worth the extra price over a Marie Calendar’s pot pie?

Kathy,
Thanks for the updated info. I didn’t mean to dog your product. It sounds great and certainly looks delicious

Please don’t let the price keep you from trying the Twin Hens pot pie. It is fabulous! I have only tried the chicken pie (don’t eat beef) and my family loves it. My kids ask for it, and they are picky eaters. Given the chance, I could probably eat an entire pie myself! I find that I definitely can’t take my family out to eat, much less buy organic, natural groceries to cook a dinner for less than $21. Give it a try–you will be happy you did!

Pot Pie Fan,
How many people do you have in your family? It seems odd that you wouldn’t be able to feed a family of four (which is what this pie serves) a nutritious, all organic meal for under $20. Not that I’m saying buying the pie is a bad idea, I’m just saying you pay for convenience when you buy frozen food.

Hi Greg,
I don’t mind the video length, just fast forward it if someone feels like it!
Anyhoo, yeah i have to take your word for how good that meal is, but you are right, the price is steep, even with Kathy’s revised prices.
Maybe in time when more units are sold in more stores the price might come down.
Thanks again,
Todd

My kids love these pies, I buy the small ones at Whole Foods in Los Angeles and I can’t keep my freezer stocked. I think they are healthy and tasty. I just gave my friend, who had a baby, a basket of them. if you like pot pies the are a must try.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Yeah, the review was one of the longest I have done but for a product north of $20 I felt it my duty to tell you every possible detail I could.
Until internet video comes equipped with smell-o-vision and the taste-o-matic Firefox plugin, I’m going to lean to the long side.
To answer some of your questions, it did taste amazing: the type you would expect from a high end restaurant.

HUGE Fan of the TH CPP. Price is wrong. Sells at Whole foods for around $20. Go get ‘em before they sell out

how long can you leave a large homemade chicken pot pie in your freezer using mached potatoes instead of crust.
