So Lean Muffin Breakfast Sandwiches
Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

Show of hands: who loves McDonald’s Sausage McMuffin with Egg? I love them. But at 450 calories (252 from fat), 28g of fat, and 260mg of cholesterol, it is a tough thing to allow myself to consume. But imagine if you could not only get the same taste of a McDonald’s Sausage McMuffin with Egg but at a bigger portion and guilt-free nutritional specs? You would jump at that opportunity right?
Look no further. The So Lean Muffin Breakfast Sandwich IS that breakfast sandwich holy grail of taste, size, and healthy qualities. When I first saw this box in the freezer aisle I was of course skeptical. (I can’t imagine how many times I have written that line). This came in a minimally designed package that looked like it belonged in a natural herbs store not the flashy glitz of the florescent lighted freezer aisle. Or simply put: it looked like something you would buy if you were allergic to something and had no alternative.
The package came with 2 individually wrapped sandwiches and each were a decent size. To heat I wrapped in a paper towel, defrosted for 2 minutes in the microwave and then heated for 60 seconds on high.

What came out was something that seemed to have been hand-delivered by angels (wearing oven mitts: they were hot!). These muffin sandwiches from So Lean contain a pork sausage pattie, cholesterol free egg, reduced fat cheddar cheese, and a whole grain english muffin.
After my first bite I knew that this was my new best friend in my mouth and there would surely be a warm reception down there in my belly. The sausage pattie was spiced perfectly and the egg fluffy and airy not rubbery. The cheese was the equivalent of a single slice and it was a perfect ration for the overall sandwich package. Finally, the whole grain english muffin was firm but not chewy or crunchy for that matter.
How do you say “perfection” in Frozenfoodeese? I say “So Lean Muffin Breakfast Sandwich”. That’s why this baby got the coveted 5 Stars.

Wow, wow, wow!
An Egg McMuffin that’s better than an Egg McMuffin! Bigger? Healthier? I have got to try this. I love the whole grain bread. Is it 100% whole wheat (doubt it) or enriched flour whole wheat?
I can’t believe this is the highest rated item….would’ve love to have seen a video review on this.

Yes, enriched flour. And like I said, I had very little expectation for these. I may have to review these again in video form.

Real sausage and egg?!? Not soy and egg white? WOW! I hated the Jimmy Deans delight McMuffin wannabe. Do they come in ham instead of sausage?

@Meg, yes and no. The sausage pattie is a Pork sausage that also has soy protein concentrate. And the eggs are egg whites that are colored (with a natural color: annatto) to look like full egg. But believe me when I tell you, they do not taste like a sacrifice. As for a ham variety, So Lean is made by Natural Harmony Foods and I wasn’t able to connect to their website so I am unsure.

I’ve been looking for a sandwich like this. less than 25% fat by calories too. If I can find it I’ll give it a try.
Greg, have you ever considered doing a review of the frozen food aisle itself ??? In other words, for the frozen foods that you enjoy the most and give the highest ratings, have you found that a particular grocery store or chain seems to carry most of these items ??

Ok, so had two sausage yesterday and tried the turkey bacon one today. Turkey bacon was definitely good, but most definitely not as good as the sausage. The sausage one filled me up more and you could taste the meat more in the sandwich.

This is a very good sandwich and quite healthy. I just wish the distribution was better. I live in the Northeast and can not find them in the New England area.

I haven't yet had the chance to try these, but was reminded of this review after listening to your interview on KCRW's “Good Food”, when you discussed your top three favorite products reviewed here on Freezerburns. Are you still thinking of doing a video review of these? I would enjoy seeing one… or even better, you could do a video in which you tasted all three of the So Lean frozen breakfast foods. Sort of like a frodown, but not necessarily… it wouldn't really have to be a competition, although it would be interesting to see if the other So Lean products are as good as (or close to) this one.
Also… I recently heard somewhere that the entire line of So Lean products was being discontinued. Anyone know if this is indeed the case? (If these products are anywhere near as delicious as I've been hearing they are, I certainly hope not…)
