Episode 89: Contessa Shrimp Scampi

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

Look at how elegant that box looks. That looks like something that you would order in a fine restaurant. I could not wait to tear open this box, pop it into the microwave and then get that succulent shrimp in a buttery garlic herb sauce, zucchini, bell peppers, and linguini noodles in my belly. Then a realization occurred and it changed my entire outlook on this Contessa Shrimp Scampi product.

Hi Greg,
Wow! after having seeing your review on that one, I would have felt exactly the way you did. That is pretty deceptive of them. They can put any picture they want as long as there is a disclaimer.
This takes the cake!:)

P.S. On a lighter note hears something funny you guy’s might find humor in :)

I agree, that’s totally a rip off. Shrimp Scampi is one of the easiest things to make – in terms of throwing garlic, butter, herbs, olive oil, in a pan with some shrimp – but the convenience of not having to make pasta and vegetables as well is the real seller in purchasing a product like the one advertised on the box. Too bad in the insides were a lie. And for almost 7 dollars? Shame on them.

My question is, my freezer section is usually divided into meats (like Steak ‘ems, and Chicken nuggets), vegetables and entrees (Lean cuisine, Hungry Man, etc). Is your market the same way, and if so, did you find this product in the meat section, or in the entree section?

I don’t mean to be rude, but your attitude change for being so hyped to being disappointed was classic. I would’ve just went to Noodles and Company for $7 rather than buy this and make my own pasta. I would’ve given it a 0 star because it is a full out lie. Shrimp scampi implies that pasta is also involved. My favorite muppet is the Swedish Chef.

^^ Yes, I know shrimp scampi doesn’t mean pasta, but it is heavily implied and the fact that they hide it in such small letters screams scam.

For those who may not know…Noodles and Company is a restaurant chain that has about 100 locations in 18 states and has a variety of noodle dishes from different country’s.
I had to Google it because I did not know what that place was.

Okay why would ANYONE prefer to pay for pasta over paying for shrimp?

I’m not even a big shrimp fan, but pasta sells for like 10 cents a pound and shrimp costs a lot of money.

So the complaint is they gave you TOO MUCH SHRIMP and TOO LITTLE PASTA? That makes no sense.

Rob, that is not my complaint at all. My complaint is the packaging gives the impression that it is a full meal: shrimp, pasta, and vegetables. And it wasn’t. The shrimp was good, but the packaging was deceitful.

WOW!!I thought that was a frozen meal with everything.I mean lean cuisine and weight watchers sell meals with shrimp and pasta in them. You would just have been better off buying a big bag shrimp and adding the pasta and scampi sauce.Or better yet just buy a bag of Bertoli shrimp scampi and linguini meal.At least everything is in there.Or even just buy a Marie Callender's frozen Shrimp Scampi with linguini meal. Also Zatarain's makes a New Orleans style one you can buy and just prepare also.
