Episode 90: Red Baron Flavored Crust Parmesan Supreme Pizza

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

Are all frozen pizzas created equal? I mean can you say that every brand is the same? Feeding off the same manufacturers for the toppings? You can say that but its simply not true. Frozen pizza manufacturers are always trying to come up with gimmicks to have their pizza stand out from the crowd. Take Red Baron and this Flavored Crust Parmesan Supreme Pizza. It’s a Red Baron pizza with a supposed added value: a flavored crust. As if all other crusts are flavorless and bland. But will this flavored crust be that added punch to push Red Baron to the top of the heap?

FreezerBurnsTM is a video review show on a mission to deliver you real reviews and real answers to one of life’s most stressful decisions: choosing the best frozen foods on the planet. Greg is the Frozen Food MasterTM and acts as both food critic and guinea pig. Join him every tuesday and friday as he eats his way through the freezer aisle one box at a time, only on Hungry Nation.

I’d also agree about the lack of toppings on the whole big frozen pizzas. If you ever try their french bread supreme pizza, it’s got a decent amount of toppings, and I prefer it calorie-wise as well.

Yeah, Red Baron pizzas are kinda ordinary, but I do like them. They do have a taste to me that holds a special place in my heart though, when Red Baron first hit the market, my grandma would buy one once and awhile, and make it for a quick snack. The taste of the classic supreme pizza reminds me of those days.
It is rare that an off the shelf food item brings back good memories for me :)

P.S. I tend to cheat a bit with these pizzas a bit these days, sometimes I will add toppings like extra olives, cheese etc.
The one that I did not like was the Red Baron Mexican style pizza, the sauce seemed to have a synthetic/chemical taste to it, very strange.

That’s disappointing…it is in fact hard to mess up a pizza…but on the same token it can be hard to exceed expectations too…especially from a frozen puck of a pie. I’d say, if I had too, CPKs frozen frisbees are pretty acceptable. Do you like the “artisan” varieties?

@Todd – that’s not cheating! That’s how I think every meal should be that’s ready prepared…always add a little touch to make it how you want it. I can’t believe how few toppings were on that RB.

I ask you this…if you could make your ultimate pie what would it be?
Crust?
Sauce?
Toppings?
Also….what do you normally get when you stop ito your local pizzeria?

11 grams of sugar seems like a lot..probably all in the sauce? Also, for a thin crust it seems awfully floppy. I think I’d go for other brands, like Freshetta, etc

the beginning of the vid in how you were explaining how parmesan is pronounced made me chuckle. It was funny.

Crust: My homemade recipe. People are always asking for me to make it. This is and should always be the foundation of any pizza.
Sauce: Homemade again. My sauce is really good
Toppings: Whenever I do a pizza party I make the crust and sauce and bring the cheese but then all the guest bring a topping to put on their pizza or to share. I call it BYOT Bring Your Own Topping.

I’ve noticed you review alot of frozen pizzas. But how come you never tried the Newman’s Own pizzas or the Mystic Pizzas? They’re pretty darn good for frozen pizzas.Alot better than Red Baron,CPK,or even Digiorno. The Paul Newman’s Four Cheese is pretty decent. And the Mystic Pepporoni is really good too.One great actor, and a Julia Roberts movie. Can’t beat that. You should give them a review on here.
