Episode 94: Mac Cheese Frodown Part 2: Smart Ones
Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master
It’s day 2 of Mac Cheese week at Freezerburns and the Macaroni and Cheese Frodown. Today’s contender is Weight Watchers Smart Ones Macaroni and Cheese, a lower in fat, lower calorie Mac Cheese option. But how will it compare to it’s peers? And does low calorie mean low taste?

Greg, thanks for putting the differences of the two reviews in perspective..yea, if I didn’t have to worry about weight gain, heart disease, etc, etc, I’d go for the fully flavored stuff every time, but at 2 1/2 times the calories and fat, you have to make compromises. Still I’m rooting for Amy’s or at the very least Lean Cuisine.

Greg…great frodown!!! Are you going to feature the Stauffer’s Mac & Cheese this week…I think I overdosed on that stuff in back in High School…unfortunately I developed a bit of an aversion to it.

I am the freezer G-d. That is bad the ice crystals according to my culinary class means that it was thawed and refrozen which is never a good thing..
Ice crystals is bad.

@Meg: Thats the compromise it seems. Stay tuned for the Lean Cuisine one and particularly how it compares to this Smart Ones Mac Cheese.
@Ryan: Yes, I will wrap up the complete frodown this week including the Stouffer’s Macaroni and Cheese.
@Tod: Glad you liked the unicorn/rainbow reference

You may have been faced with the dreaded synthetic flavor enhancer. I can just imagine a person in the back room with a white lab coat, mixing up the super secret, propitiatory ingredient in a Pyrex beaker

Hahaha, way funny review…I was laughing SO hard. That went places I didn’t think a M&C Frodown review could….riding unicorns? rainbows? fantasy land?…..awesome!
Yeah, those chemically altered foods are strange. They DO make light cheese as well as fat-free cheese, not quite sure how they do it. The weirdest thing is fat-free mayo….isn’t mayonnaise basically fat (oil and egg whites)? I really don’t know how they make these things. Do you see any super strange ingredients on there? Soon enough we’ll all be eating Soylent Green

Greg,
Actually I’m also very interested in the difference between Lean Cuisine and Stouffer’s, since they are both made by the same Mothership.

@dman Stouffer’s is coming this week.
@Meg, in due time you will hear and see the difference. And believe me, there IS a difference between Stouffer’s and Stouffer’s Lean Cuisine Macaroni and Cheese

Stouffer`s Macaroni and Cheese is great. I hit it with hot sauce and grated parmesan. It is loaded with fat and sodium but the 11oz model makes a good lunch for a big man like myself.
I will be interested in Greg`s take on the Stouffer’s Lean Cuisine Macaroni and Cheese. I`ve never tried it, but if he says it is good I will give it a try.
I have a funny feeling its not so good though.

@Moriah – Haha, I’d hope they’d know that Soylent Green is featured in “Soylent Green”!
