Episode 102: Marie Callender’s Pasta Al Dente Rigatoni con Pesce

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

I love reviewing stuff that I am not completely confident I pronounced correctly. That way when I butcher the name it reminds me of how stupid I am. No matter how you pronounce “pesce” (which means fish), you need to know that this Marie Callender’s Pasta Al Dente Rigatoni con Pesce is new, is plentiful, and is creamy. But what does that really mean to the Frozen Food Master?

Yeah, the sauce didn't look creamy at all but it still looked pretty tasty though. I see what you mean by the price.
I gotta say, my favorite Joe Pesci movie is GoodFellas! I love the “I'm funny how” scene :-D

  • Todd

Here's the link to that great scene in GoodFellas.

That looks pretty dece Greg, I think I'll give it a shot. I've been a fan of their pot pies for some time. One of these days I need to visit an actual Marie Callender's place though. Nice Walter Sobchak-esque bowling shirt BTW.

Another fine fine review. Pesce means fish in Italian…so Pasta Rigatoni To The Tooth With Fish (shrimp). It's pronounces “pay-shay” – http://forvo.com/word/pesce/

    “I'm Chinese…well I'm not even really Chinese…I can't pronounce that…” – Haha, I love it.

“Let's take a look….at what that…looks like.” :P Once my brother got a weird urn for my mother as a Christmas gift…as she was opening it she didn't look too excited but tried to look like she was in to it, she proclaimed….”Look at that!!….I'm going to have to look at that.”

A soy sauce 1 ounce shot has 933mg of sodium (33% DV). Damn these meals are high in sodium. On a tangent, I wonder how much soy sauce a typical sushi diner consumes in one meal.

Self venting schmenting….when will they be able to make a meal that automatically get's in my belly?

“What's she doin' in Itlee” is from Only You.

Favorite Pesci movie!!!!?? There's no freakin' question…Home Alone, hands down, good-bye, good night, case closed, lock the door behind you.

    that is a good brand.

Awesome Review! That was hilarious! Because I lived in Italy, I often scrutinize American-ized Italian dishes. (Olive Garden commercials make me cringe) Nevertheless, I'll probably be trying this anyway. : )

Ok, as promised, my fave Joe Pesci movie is no question, Casino. For this scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip2WYXbPuuw

In it, (earmuffs kids) Pesci says the F word like 20 some times and he makes you scared about how close he is from doing something irrational and violent. Not unlike Todd's choice of Good Fellas.

Great review! “Pay shay” is the closest I can get phonetically spelling it out with using English letters and not IPA syllables- say it with Italianate vowels (long) and that's close to what it's supposed to be. ( IPA: [ˈpeʃʃe] – the ʃ is a “sh” sound and the “e” a long “A” vowel- like pay):)

  • Jim

That scene is a classic Todd. Those guys dont “Mess” around.

I am going to be contrarian here and say My Cousin Vinny was my favorite Joe Pesci movie… but Casino was damn good too.

Greg if I were to get this meal and then add a few shrimp I had in my freezer, would that make for a full and satisfying meal? Enough pasta and other stuff going on there?

  • Jim

@Bear I want to buy a t shirt and Im not in Cali!? What can I do?

My Cousin Vinny is an excellent choice. Still puzzled why Marisa Tomei won an oscar for her role but whatever.

To answer your question, the shrimp to pasta ratio wasn't bad. But if you wanted to make it a Royce-satisfying meal, I would add some more pasta and shrimp to it.

I loved this dish!!! I thought the sauce was amazing!!! It is a little cheaper where I bought it… plus it was on sale for 2 for $5 ($2.50 a piece) and I had a 75 cent printable coupon from like smartsource.com or coupons.com, so it was quite cheap for me.

BTW I also just tried the Pasta Al Dente Fettuccini Chicken Balsamico, and I don't know if you have tried this already or not, but I found it a little saltier than my liking.

And I think that you would pronounce that word peshay. I am no Italian expert but I have studied a little bit on how to pronounce French, Italian, and Spanish words and I believe that is how it would be pronounced. It might also be peshee, but I don't think so.
