Palermo Hearth Italia Pizza The Messina (Spinach and Goat Cheese)

Place directly on oven rack, cook 400 degrees for 11-17 min. I used a pizza pan to cook mine on.
I have a special surprise for you all on my weekly pizza night. Tonight I am going to have, what I consider the BEST frozen pizza out there…Palermos! I love their Buffalo Chicken pizza, but I don’t eat Palermos very often because it is not as healthly as Amy’s or Kashi, but hey, ya gotta live a little once in a while. Plus I biked 40 miles today, so I need to replenish my calories

As you can see from the picture, this pizza has a good layer of spinach and the white round things are the goat cheese. Now I don’t like goat cheese, it’s got a very strong aftertaste, so we’ll see if this ruins it. Sprinkled liberally on top is parmesan cheese. There doesn’t appear to be any sauce at all, just a layer of mozzarella cheese.
The parmesan cheese is the predominate smell, with a little spinach thrown in.
Now, how does it taste? My first bite was directly into a chunk of goat cheese…very salty and not as strong “goaty” as I was expecting, which is a good thing. It was also very creamy, almost like cream cheese texture. The crust was buttery and slight crispy even though this was not a thin crust. it could be related to the fact that I cooked this on a pizza pan, not directly on the oven rack. The spinach was subtle and the underlying mozzarella cheese didn’t even register on my taste buds, but instead added the base that normally the sauce would provide. There was a blast of parmesan cheese in every bite to add a little zing.
Overall, the lack of sauce didn’t affect taste, but without sauce, the pizza was pretty dry. If it weren’t for the goat cheese, this would have been a pretty boring pizza. A little disappointing for the “best frozen pizza”, don’t you think? Luckily, Palermo has tons of variety, both crust wise and topping wise, so I can make it my mission to try as many as I can. But I won’t be buying this particular one again.

Meg – Good thorough review. From what you describe I'd imagine this would have been an epic pie…with all the cheeses, the crust, etc. Too bad it wasn't better. For $5 it's seems like a great deal though. Would you opt for this or a foot-long from Subway?…..or and Iced Venti Whateva Whateva from Starbucks?

The pizza, definitely. It was very filling and it wasn't bad tasting, just not what I was expecting, given that I had had their Buffalo Chicken, which is AWESOME! I'm also not a big flavored coffee person. I might opt for a tall soy latte every now and then, but I'm a “man's man” and usually take it black!
