Episode 111: Michelina’s Lean Gourmet Snackers Baked Pepperoni Pizza

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

Hmm, it looks like a doughy hockey puck that I once knew and we all know how that turned out. The only difference it seems is this is a whole lot cheaper. So will this $1 Michelina’s Lean Gourmet Snackers Baked Pepperoni Pizza be worth its price?

Interestingly enough... these *are*, in fact, BUNdinos.

The company that makes the Michelina's products (called Bellisio Foods) originally created BUNdinos as a separate brand; however, the BUNdinos brand was recently discontinued, and the two best-selling flavors (Pepperoni Pizza, and Ham & Cheese) were re-branded under the Michelina's Lean Gourmet label.

The Bellisio Foods site still lists both brands on their "Our Products" page, although the BUNdinos site has been taken down:

    http://www.bellisiofoods.com/our_brands.html

So the real question here is: Did the actual products change, or are these still the same BUNdinos with a new name? (At the very least, they seem to be a much more reasonable price now; BUNdinos were way too expensive.) You seemed to like the Michelina's Pepperoni Pizza "Snackers", but an exact comparison is impossible since you didn't review this flavor in its original "BUNdinos" incarnation. Perhaps you should review the Ham & Cheese version of the Michelina's Baked Snackers, so that we can find out if the actual taste of the product has changed, or if only the name has changed. This could be interesting...

(Also of note: From this information, we can also deduce that Luigino ("Jeno") Paulucci, the founder of the Michelina's brand, is the mysterious "Chef Luigino" who was mentioned on the BUNdinos box.)

Oh, and a belated answer to the QOTD: I've been to a few dollar stores, albeit not recently (the appeal was far stronger when I was a young child; it was an amazing concept that there could be an entire store filled with stuff that kids could actually afford)... but I have to admit, I have never actually found anything in a dollar store that was actually worth buying.
  • Good knowledge! Nice research. Hahaha, almost TMI :P

my local dollar tree carries a brand of frozen food called snapps
the snapps company makes appetizers basically-but ive tried several of there products and there not bad! for a buck!
my faves are there pizza snaps and cheese sicks
the make cream cheese poppers to but the original poppers brand is way better!

the best thing at a dollar store that i spotted is the multi colored unicorn giant lolipop candy. I hope i win.

So, wouldn't it make more sense to having the serving size be 2? Then you'd have three servings per container. I mean it's meant to be a snack or appetizer. Did they have other varieties? I'm surprised that that people aren't suing for misrepresentation. The pic on the box looks nothing like the real product and that's the theme for all the "stuffed" pockets nowadays.

I've only been to a Dollar Store once and that was plenty, thanks.

When I was younger, I bought a $100 replica that was like 2 feet wide and 2 /12 feet long and I felt happy because I felt that I came out with something big for so little, even though it was worthless. =p
  • One hundred cold pennies...damn. You gotta ask yourself...how do they do it? With the coupon they're practically paying you to eat it.

That wasn't really quick math...quick math woulda been "*bammm!!* $0.166666667" or with the coupon $.0125 per "Snacker"!

Question are you a pizza crust eater? I don't get people that leave the crust, I love the crust. Come on man, you paid for it! Dipped in some good ol' Ranch...mmmmm.

Best thing at a dollar store? Seems every time I get something there it doesn't actually get used so I'll go with the item that got put to it's best use and that would be Silly String! I also bought my brother a gas siphon for Christmas to help through these tough economic times :)

I don't know Greg, from your reaction I wouldn't have guessed 4 stars...I've seen more deserving items receive less....seems like they bought with the price point and coupon...I'm just saying....

    @TProphet Hahahah

Bear there is no question that price played a big role in the rating and here's why: they tasted better than Bundinos at a fraction of the cost. You can't get anything worth pointing in your mouth (thats disease free) for under a buck.

To answer your question, I love the crust.
  • LOL Greg, I think we have a little bit of a frozen Vulcan mind-meld going on. I just got back from the store and stocked up on Michelinas. I saw this product, but didn't get it. I actually really like Michelinas. Well . . . some of 'em. I also like the fact that one of them makes a nice light lunch. Two of them make a nice dinner and you can get a little variety. Try their Tortellini Alfredo. Sooooo good. It's really rich and creamy. The pasta comes out perfectly.
