Deep Fried Bagel Bites
Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master
Welcome to the first episode of a new Freezerburns segment called Fryer Burns where the Frozen Food Master will see if deep frying a frozen food item makes it even better.
For today’s episode we deep fry Cheese, Sausage and Pepperoni Bagel Bites in Old Bay Better Batter. Will deep fried Bagel Bites taste even better than the original?
FreezerBurnsTM is a video review show on a mission to deliver you real reviews and real answers to one of life’s most stressful decisions: choosing the best frozen foods on the planet. Greg is the Frozen Food MasterTM and acts as both food critic and guinea pig. Join him every tuesday and friday as he eats his way through the freezer aisle one box at a time, only on Hungry Nation.

I am really having trouble believing that anything deepfried isn't 100 times better. I am going to have to investigate. Here I thought salad was better deep fried.

Holy crap I'm having chest pains just looking at that. Ever try a deep fried Twinkie?

Ha, I thought that this would be a yes!? Nice job though and good idea!
@ Ryan, yes. and deep fried oreo. Both are good. I actually had both of them here for the first time about 3 years ago in Vegas at this little crappy casino (Mermaids). Oddly enough, but my wife and I were watching tv and saw the place on Kathy Griffin. Search Kathy Griffin part 4 6/8/09 on you tube. Ha!

Well, you know… it's hard to improve on the greatness that is the Bagel Bite!
Still, I have to admit that those looked pretty good (although I agree that they probably wouldn't be *better* than the original… alas, I don't have a deep fryer and therefore cannot try this experiment for myself any time in the forseeable future). Did you think that the Bagel Bites actually *lost* something in terms of taste by being deep fried? Or was it just a case of “not better; just different”?

That intro was dramatic.
AWESOME!!! I'm so looking forward to other reviews of this ilk. I would've guess yes too. I'm with Joel on this one….I'd have thought even the Deli Express Barbecue Deluxe would be better prepared this way.
So question….did you sleep on the couch that night or has Mrs. FFM softened up a little? ….'cause I certainly, for one, want to see more of these.
Damn you Greg…I've already got all these things I'd like to see deep fried….I'm sure you've got a ton lined up

So obviously with this being the first episode of Fryer Burns I need to do some explaining. Hopefully this will answer all your questions!
1. Yes, I have a ton of ideas lined up (in fact of 3 other episodes already taped and they are a lot of fun
2. This will be an occasional segment much like One Word Reviews and Frodowns. The bulk of the reviews here on Freezerburns will still be the normal in-depth video reviews.
3. As you can see from some of the shots, I have been forced out intot he garage to actually deep fry these items. This was done to preserve my marriage.
4. As for the Bagel Bites, the fact that I deep fried them did not improve them. What I like about Bagel Bites is the grilled taste on the bottom of the bagels and really tasting the layers of ingredients as I bite into them. I admit the seafoody taste of the Old Bay Seasoning was an interesting mix. But it simply was not decidingly BETTER than when it isn't deep fried. Thus the thumbs down on this experiment. Just wait until you see some of the other things I have been deep frying…ones that were horrible typically but just may be better when they are fried up in batter!

That's too funny the wife doesn't let me deep fry anything in the house either. I too have to go out in the garage to deep fry. Otherwise I will hear about it for two days. But still married so I must be listening….lol.

I vote on the morningstar bacon strips to be deep fried.

It could just be the choice of breading that made them less than successful. Maybe just a plain batter would not overpower the pizza stuff.

Did you thaw the bagel bites at all or did you batter them up completely frozen?
