Episode 120: Ethnic Gourmet Chicken Tandoori with Spinach

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

This is the first Indian dish I have reviewed here at Freezerburns and I was a bit hesitant. I love Indian food but sometimes Indian food does not love me. And when I saw the obviously photoshopped image on the box I was less than impressed. Will this Ethnic Gourmet Chicken Tandoori with Spinach be the real deal or a bum meal?

Venti Soy Latte. Or, Iced Venti Soy Latte.
That one's pretty straightforward.
You don't need the “double”, it already has 2 shots in it. short/tall = 1 shot, grande/venti = 2 shots.
Basically, you know those boxes on the sides of the cups? Just read straight down those, for the most part.
Yeah, I work there…
I have realized that I got way too excited about this. I need to get out more.

This actually looks really good, and the nutrition info is good too. I might look this one up.

Haven't really eaten much Indian food, but I do like chicken curry. By the way, I don't think I can try that Tandoori Chicken after Googling “meconium”.

That shirt is amazing! It's perfect for you.

I had the best street-side Indian food while in London, it was so dirty and so hole-in-the-wall….fantastic!

I don't know Greg….Indian dishes aren't known for their good looks…looks like the slop I get on my plate at a regular restaurant.

Naan is AMAZING!!!! You're SO right, it's definitely the best part….fresh warm buttery Naan.

Starbucks order is the order that's on the cup… Temp (Iced or Hot), Size, Decaf or Regular, Syrup, Milk, Shots, Extras (Splenda, Extra Hot, etc.). It should always come out the same….it just makes it uniform for the Barista. Not sure if order matters to the Tandoori police.

LOVE Indian food….I'm gonna give sort of a cop out answer…favorite dish?….the lunch buffet :P Why pick one type of curry, they're all awesome. Chicken Marsala is amazing too. You just rarely get those flavors, they're all so exciting in my mouth.

@Julia – Hummus? That's Mediterranean?!? Isn't it?

Dammit, Bear. I don't know. I googled it, because I wasn't sure, and it seemed like it was….
I'm going to pretend I'm right, because I feel better about myself that way.

Haha, sorry. I wasn't meaning to be harsh. Here's the wiki on it ('cause we all know wiki is 100% accurate :P )

Per them it's Mediterranean and Middle Eastern. If it's Indian for you, it's Indian!

I LOVE Indian food. My favorite is Chicken Tikka Masala with Naan for sopping. Now I need to make a trip to Saffron

I second the Chicken Tikka Masala – I'm addicted to the one they serve in the food court near where I work.

Never had indian food before, but since I'm a fan of chicken and rice dishes, it looks like something I would try.

I always thought hummus was Greek myself.

I ADORE Indian food and have eaten this Ethnic Gourmet meal on a few occasions, but my preference in frozen Indian meals is Tandoori Chef. Their Tandoori Chicken (and the order really doesn't matter) is just the chicken and spinach and it's great. Plus they even make naan! They also make a great tikka masala and palak paneer.

I love Indian food… I would say that my favorite dish is probably sambar. (I don't really have a favorite *type* of sambar; I enjoy trying different varieties.) And yes, I have to agree with you about the naan, Greg… it seems that everything tastes better on a good piece of naan. That stuff is seriously addictive!

I will also mention that I have a serious love of chutneys, and love trying as many different kinds as I can find… still, I'm not sure if that should count, since chutney is a condiment rather than an actual dish.

Oh, and about the “Chicken Tandoori” vs. “Tandoori Chicken” question: I asked a friend of mine who used to live in India about this one; he said that “Tandoori Chicken” is the correct name of the dish… although as always seems to be the case when ethnic dishes become more popular/common in the Western world (and often more “Americanized”), in general, word order seems to matter less here in the US (and even perhaps Europe) than it does in India.

If I had to guess on the “Chicken Tikka Masala” issue (i.e. why it isn't called “Tikka Masala Chicken”), I would guess that it has to do with the idea that word order seems to matter less in the “Western world” (Europe/North America) than it does in India when referring to the names of dishes… it is generally believed that Chicken Tikka Masala was created by a British chef (not sure exactly where in Britain, however… it was either in England or Scotland), who of course could give his new creation any name he chose; therefore it was a “Westernized” version of “Indian cuisine” to begin with. Despite its not truly being Indian in origin, however, Chicken Tikka Masala eventually became such a popular “Indian” dish that it is now served in restaurants around the world, including India.

just to add to the word order discussion because it is so intriguing, the order is often based on cooking method vs name of a particular dish ie. Fried Chicken and Tandoori Chicken (cooking methods) vs Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Parmesan (chicken dishes)

Naan is the best, especially garlic naan, you just can't go wrong. I would love some Indian food, but I highly doubt there is one near where I am working in Mexico. This dish looked good, and I think I would spring for it if I could find it near me.
