Episode 120: Ethnic Gourmet Chicken Tandoori with Spinach

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

This is the first Indian dish I have reviewed here at Freezerburns and I was a bit hesitant. I love Indian food but sometimes Indian food does not love me. And when I saw the obviously photoshopped image on the box I was less than impressed. Will this Ethnic Gourmet Chicken Tandoori with Spinach be the real deal or a bum meal?

Naan is the best, especially garlic naan, you just can't go wrong. I would love some Indian food, but I highly doubt there is one near where I am working in Mexico. This dish looked good, and I think I would spring for it if I could find it near me.

I like Indian food - like bison steaks and maize. That shirt rocks BTW;)
  • Hahahah!
  • just to add to the word order discussion because it is so intriguing, the order is often based on cooking method vs name of a particular dish ie. Fried Chicken and Tandoori Chicken (cooking methods) vs Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Parmesan (chicken dishes)

I love Indian food... I would say that my favorite dish is probably sambar. (I don't really have a favorite *type* of sambar; I enjoy trying different varieties.) And yes, I have to agree with you about the naan, Greg... it seems that everything tastes better on a good piece of naan. That stuff is seriously addictive!

I will also mention that I have a serious love of chutneys, and love trying as many different kinds as I can find... still, I'm not sure if that should count, since chutney is a condiment rather than an actual dish.

Oh, and about the "Chicken Tandoori" vs. "Tandoori Chicken" question: I asked a friend of mine who used to live in India about this one; he said that "Tandoori Chicken" is the correct name of the dish... although as always seems to be the case when ethnic dishes become more popular/common in the Western world (and often more "Americanized"), in general, word order seems to matter less here in the US (and even perhaps Europe) than it does in India.
  • I always thought hummus was Greek myself.

I ADORE Indian food and have eaten this Ethnic Gourmet meal on a few occasions, but my preference in frozen Indian meals is Tandoori Chef. Their Tandoori Chicken (and the order really doesn't matter) is just the chicken and spinach and it's great. Plus they even make naan! They also make a great tikka masala and palak paneer.

I love Indian food . . although my mother is indian so I grew up with it. and yes - Naan (or Roti, or chipati) is very necessary.

Never had indian food before, but since I'm a fan of chicken and rice dishes, it looks like something I would try.

I don't know why these meals are so expensive. Indian food is among the cheapest to prepare, you don't go to an Indian restaurant for a prime N.Y. Strip or lobsters.

Chicken, spice, potatoes, lentils, rice ... they should be able to sell these things for $2.00.
  • I second the Chicken Tikka Masala - I'm addicted to the one they serve in the food court near where I work.
