Micro Magic: The Most Difficult Frozen Food to Find Out About on the Internet

Out of all the fond memories I have of frozen foods when I was a kid, there is nothing more gimmicky, more brilliant, more utterly amazing than the line of Micro Magic Frozen Foods from the 80’s.

For those who have never heard of these foods let me first warn you: the ingenuity of these foods still blow my mind 20 years later.

Consider this: Frozen Milkshakes that you stick in your microwave. Full bacon cheeseburgers that you microwave (bun and all). And crinkle cut french fries that you microwaved into a soggy mess. Regardless of how they tasted, we marveled as kids at the possibility of popping an entire cheeseburger with bun into a microwave.

We didn’t have fancy steamer trays or crisping sleeves back then. We had microwave ovens that didn’t have spinning trays, or fancy defrost settings. It was “On” or “Off”. And the timer was on a dial.

Then we had these amazing microwaveable milkshakes. A product that dared you to think about how the hell that worked: a treat meant to be enjoyed cold popped into a microwave oven to make it hot?

Yet somehow it worked. And boy did I love coming home from school and seeing those red boxes packing my freezer.

Unfortunately, there is very little that you can find on these things on the internet. I found this pic here.

Anyone else remember these?

Yeah I'm sorry but the fries weren't bad, and the cheeseburgers were amazing! THey just disappeared one day and I have looked for them at every new grocery store that comes around just hoping that it was the grocers who changed their mind about carrying the product. THey were delicious all of it. I haven't had anything from the microwave since that was nearly as good to me. But I just started thinkin about it last night, I wonder if there were health hazards that they linked to it that made them pull the food off the shelf.

The last time I ate a Micro Magic product was in 1989. My Grandfather bought the box of milkshakes every week. They were awesome! I never tried any of the other products.
  • Oh yes...those fries...I actually liked'em!!!! Me and my sister ate them all the time. Was this the same one made the microwaveable ice cream??? I remember the shakes and all, but I specifically remember as a youngster popping an ice cream in the microwave for a few seconds and the idea was it to get the topping (ex.hot fudge) to get hot and the ice cream was supposed to stay cold. Of course it didn't, but strangely enough I still enjoyed it ;) Was it Micro Magic who made this too??? Nice blog!!!!

yeah, its crazy there isn't more pictures of Micro Magic products around. I guess in the 80's we probably didnt think of taking pictures of food like that. I really want some of those fries. They should come back out, 25 year anniversary or something like that.

Wow! I don't want to date myself but . . . yeah, I remember MicroMagic (boxes were in English of course). Fries and burgers were HORRIBLE! I remember the milkshakes, I'm just not sure if my mom bought them for us.

Hey, I just noticed...but these don't "appear" to be in a freezer? The ones I remember were definately in the freezer island.

    Hummmm

Oh yea!!! I LOVED the fries! Used to eat them when my mom wouldn't turn on the oven for OreIda. I vaguely remember the cheeseburgers too. Now the milkshakes, I don't recall at all.

Rates right up there with "Spacesticks" for food memories!
  • I kinda remember those crinkle cut fries....but this milkshake you speak of?!? What the heck? How does that work? Wouldn't then just be hot chocolate? ....or I guess not because it's ice cream? That sounds like it could actually work. I wonder why others haven't done this.

The idea was basically the milkshakes were frozen solid and the microwaving defrosted them to thick milkshake levels. The problem is it actually did make some of it on the sides and the rim on top warm and sort of like pudding skin.
