Episode 128: Wanchai Ferry Shrimp Lo Mein
Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master
There has been a lot of talk about these new frozen meals from Wanchai Ferry. So you know the Frozen Food Master had to try it out the first chance he got. It’s pretty tough to make a splash in the frozen asian food market. Will this Wanchai Ferry Shrimp Lo Mein be good enough?

I tried one of those American Test Kitchen receipes for a Pork Stir-Fry with Noodles (Lo Mein). That had to be my favorite, especially with the super plum sauce side, man it was fantastic!
Greg your body language seemed to be indicating a 3 review, when you look down, deliberate and put it all together. Alas I was surprised you gave the lo mein a decent 3 1/2, despite the prep length and multiple steps. I admit you surprised me on that one!

I like Shrimp Lo Mein. I haven't had much luck with the frozen stuff, but I'll definitely give Wanchai a shot.

I know it's a pain in the butt for you to do all those steps especially if you are cooking for your family of 5! Your right you might as well just make it from scratch.
The way those noodles were sticking together it almost looked like you were eating a Cup O Noodle.
Oh gosh my favorite Lo Mein, I'm torn between shrimp and chicken. I love them both.

So….. a Chinese person is not an “average person” then?
In my neck of the woods they call it Chow Mein. I didn't see Lo Mein until I went to Denver….I'm not sure what the real difference is.
Was that a Lou Bega Mombo/Combo #5 reference? Geez Grerg, maybe you should do the Macarena for us
Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly….if I'm gonna go through all that trouble I'd rather just cook up something myself….more freedom….more pride….more reward. I hate having to always look at directions….it's funny, if you just gave me the ingredients I'd cook up something wicked but if you give directions it's like I mindlessly have to follow them…and I hate that. It's like when your mom is instructing you how to drive when you have your permit…you know what you're doing and would be fine but now she's telling you exactly what to do each step of the way.
Counting the shrimp “1,2,3,4…8,9″ not a fan of this growing up?

My favorite Lo Mein has to tofu but I must say that varies widely from “second-rate Chinese joint” to the next. That being said I usually just opt for the veggie…but I'm also a huge fan of shrimp but again you gotta know its good prior. My step brother asks for NO VEGGIES!!! extra chicken….it's So greasy and disgusting.

Perhaps you should hit the gym so you can easily open the products you are reviewing for us?!
That was a crazy amount of work for a frozen product, no? I expect ease & simplicity from my frozen foods – isn't that the point of them?
I prefer House Special Lo Mein from any reputable take-out joint.

Come on Greg, you have to review that Michael Angelo's Baked Ziti! I'm anxious to see what you think of it.
QOTD: I like pork with my lo mein, mmmmm…

Sounded like someone was finishing up the Lo Mein for you off camera.
I appreciate you taking prep time into acct, but I'd be tempted for those times when I want to “cook” (ie pull out a pan and do something with it). I'm not a big Lo Mein person, but shrimp would be my choice. Always nervous about ordering pork in restaurants…sometimes it's fatty.

If I have to have “Lo Mein” (crazy Americans and their butchered pronunciations) it will have to be from one of the Hong Kong joints in Chinatown! If it has to be frozen, then give me one of those Ming Tsai concoctions you reviewed.

Nice show. Pork favorite ingredient. Jewel Osco is over priced at $8.99 per package of shrimp chow mein if frozen food department. Wainchai Ferry.

made this lo mein yesterday
I thought it was very good, and yes, the noodles did come out in a big chunk. Just stir them until it gets coated with the sauce. Good meal but it does take some time to make it.
