Episode 210: One Word Review: Eskimo Pie Dark Chocolate

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

Once upon a time there was a supreme being that made the heavens and the earth and when he was tired of creating the big things he planted a cocoa tree in the glaciers of Alaska. Soon that tree produced dark cocoa beans that were made into chocolate igloos where the Eskimos congregated. Eventually a competition was set up to determine who would be the leader of this group of chilly, creamy, dark chocolatey pieces of brilliance. Gauntlets were thrown, blood was lost, hands were frostbitten. And when there was only one remaining he assumed the title of Lord of the Eskimo Pies. And that person was named “Darktic”.

I can't resist commenting on the summary here either... wow. That was... beautiful. Pure epic poetry. This piece of writing could have been lifted straight from one of the great classics such as "The Odyssey"... well... that is, if the ancient Greeks had had access to mass-produced ice cream products on a stick while on the voyage home to Ithaca... and freezer technology... which, you have to admit, would have made for a *much* more interesting version of "The Odyssey."

Where was I going with this? Okay, I must be more tired than I thought. At any rate, that *was* a killer summary. :)

As for the Eskimo Pie itself... meh. I don't remember them being terribly outstanding... just your generic ice cream with the standard chocolate coating... decent enough if you like ice cream bars, but nothing exciting or memorable here. Still, I have to give them props for the dark chocolate; that does add *something* to make it stand out just a little bit. I don't know if that alone would be enough to cause people to choose this ice cream bar over a similar product though... I think that it most often comes down to the nostalgia factor; if you liked a particular brand of ice cream bar as a child, you would probably choose that same brand today. (Unless, of course, you read the above review summary... *that* could be influential in getting people to try this product.) :)

    Great review, as always.
