Episode 214: Ocean Beauty Sea Choice Lemon Herb Salmon

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

Sure there’s tons of fish species that swim downstream but it is a badass fish like a salmon that decided to go against the grain. You have to applaud that type of initiative. Like the initiative Sea Choice has taken to serve up a frozen piece of salmon that cooks right in the packaging. Now that’s a convenient way to cook a piece of fish! But just because it is an innovative cooking method doesn’t mean its a good tasting piece of fish. The Frozen Food Master gives you the “reel” deal.

Nutrition Action Health Letter article says Kroger sells Ocean Beauty frozen salmon. Our new store in Knoxville, TN doesn't seem to have it for sale. Help.
  • My favorite thing about Alaska is Adak. Nothing more fun than spending half a week exploring an abandoned former Navy base, while wondering whether your flight out will actually manage to land! :)

Baked Alaska, I have reservations assuming it comes from Alaska, but oh my is it delicious.

Baked Alaska was the first thing that came to mind for me too (and its variation, "Bombe Alaska", is even better)... however, I somehow doubt that it actually comes from Alaska. Oh, well. :)

I've never actually been to Alaska myself, but would love to visit someday; I have a friend who used to live there, and two other acquaintances of mine have visited there as well. From what I hear from them (and the pictures I've seen), it's a beautiful place. I wouldn't want to live there (far too cold for me), but it would certainly be fun to visit.

On the subject of this review... I have reservations about the potential quality of microwaved frozen fish in general, although it doesn't sound like this one was *awful*. I can see how it would be an easy, convenient meal for one person, but not so much if you were trying to feed two or more; then it seems like it would be wasteful in terms of the time it would take to cook each one individually, not to mention the packaging and the price... the convenience factor would definitely be lost there.

I know I wouldn't ever buy this particular product myself; I hate salmon (I had an unfortunate experience years ago, when I was served some bad salmon at a restaurant; I haven't been able to go near the stuff ever since). I might consider trying one of the many other varieties of Ocean Beauty seafood products sometime... anything but salmon...if I'm looking for something fast and convenient and happen to come across them, since it sounds like the quality is decent. Still, I doubt I would ever go out of my way to seek out these products.
  • My favourite things about Alaska are (1) my friend and former co-worker, Duane, who grew up on Kodiak Island and (2) that Sarah Palin went BACK there.

Re salmon texture, sometimes I actually prefer it being a little more toothsome; not al dente, but with a gentle firmness.

Rob, thanks for the tip re SuperTarget. Even though I'm an empty nester now and only cook for two, I still buy and cook in bulk, then load up my freezers. (Yes, I have two.)
  • Not a big samon person. Had to comment cause my favorite thing about Alaska are wild Orcas (Killer Whales)! (Yes I'm a dork) Randy so kindly reminds me as I am typing now :P.

Looks like a good product. They use Keta salmon, which you can get pretty cheap, I get mine at SuperTarget for $6.99 a pound, with 6 individually wrapped portions per bag. You can season the pieces yourself and microwave them in a Ziploc microwave steam bag, which costs 27 cents a piece, or saute them in butter or olive oil.

Keta salmon is nutritionally the same as Coho or Sockeye and a lot cheaper, but they often don't have the red color in the flesh. They taste just the same in my experience. Stay away from the Salmon at Walmart, it can be pretty nasty in my experience.

Interesting concept. I get my salmon from Omaha Steaks and they are super easy to cook. I broil them in the toaster oven, so I doubt that I would ever thry this, however if they have scallops, I'm there!. Anyway, quick suggestion. A blue plate would have shown the product better, so maybe select the plate according to the expected color of the reviewed substance?

I'd have to say Northern Exposure as well.
