There really isn’t anything more American than Apple pie. Ok, maybe baseball, and obesity is more american. But once you throw some streusal on top it goes from being from the heartland to the land of the Dutch.

In this frodown, I taste test 3 Dutch Apple Pies head to head to head. The contenders: Sara Lee Dutch Apple Pie, Marie Callender’s Dutch Apple Pie and the Mrs. Smith’s Dutch Apple Crumb Pie. Who will come out victorious? The Frozen Food Master will tell you!

This episode and the rest of the episodes published this week are inspired by Evan Kleiman’s Pie-A-Day Project. Evan is baking a pie every day this summer!

europe has more obese people. just thought i'd throw that in.

also, dangit, i couldn't resist seeing the scores under the video and it spoiled the video in some ways.

    thanks for the entertaining review

Streusel is german, not dutch. The Pennsylvania Dutch aren't dutch either – Dutch, in this case, is a perversion of Deutsch. So the pie, being an invention of the Pennsylvania Dutch, is American, but with german roots.

My favorite Apple Pie is my own. I also and known for my Apple Crisp. If I freeze it and send it to you does that count lol.

Fun review Greg. When are we gonna see Mrs. FFM? She's getting braver and helping you from behind the scenes at least! :D

  • MattUD

    Bring on the shoo-fly pie!

  • JamsV

awesome…Im from the Caribbean, thanks for the valuable info relating to apple pies… i was a little confused in choosing an apple pie…but u cleared it up for me…i might go with the Sarah Lee Apple pie…
    keep up the great work!

  • Isolder74

You needed to rest all of those pies longer. Whatever the instructions said it should rest at least 3 hours before serving. From the looks of the Marie Callender's pie it needed to rest for another hour before cutting.

  • Isolder74

Streusel is German. Dutch is a bastardization of Deutch or German in German. It makes sense then for it to make you think of the Sound of Music where we see Max having an uneven 3.

  • Isolder74

I love Shoo-Fly pie. The Pennsylvania Dutch are the masters of sweet yumminess! Lets see….Shoo-Fly pie, cobbler, apple pie, apple crisp, cheesecake……I could go on forever!

  • crosswalkernest

I'm a sucker for any apple pie as long as it's decent and it has a scoop of cinnamon ice cream on it.

4g trans fat? I would NEVER eat that pie.

  • Astroshad

YES!!! I make a mean apple crisp with cheddar melted on top!

Fresh probably refers to indicating that in the Marie Callender’s pie the apples were placed in the pie without cooking the apples into a filling first.
