Episode 221: Yummy Chicken Breast Rings

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

Upon first glance you will think these are just a bag of onion rings. But this is way way different. These Yummy Chicken Breast Rings are chicken! That’s insane! Yummy took a bunch of chicken breasts and turned them into rings of gimmicky breaded morsels. Are chicken pieces meant to have a whole hole in it? The Frozen Food Master tells you.

I crammed a lot of information in a new shorter format to Freezerburns. Hope you like it.

Ohhhhh, I'm sorry..I have to be negative. I don't like this new format at ALL! Too disjointed. I am so upset that I don't give a rat's A$$ about the chicken donuts! I'd rather have you do away with the nutritionals on video if shortening the time is the goal. This new way is soooooooooooooooooo obvious that it's a cut and paste. Go back, pleeeezzz!!

Greg,
Wow, love you man, but the continuity of this review had me bumming, part of the allure is your expression and buildup of the review. I appreciate you trying a new format, but felt the cuts and transitions kept me from engaging. Keep up the good work FFM, hope you take my comment with more than a grain of sodium.

Not a fan of the heavy editing either. I liked seeing everything happening between the cuts, gave the videos a more… I dont know, down to earth feel.

How about…Rooster-Os? Weird. That's too much like cereal, huh.
That's all I got, i think they stayed with Chicken Rings cuz everything else sounds…..odd.

No, I hate the fact that it's so disjointed (TV people would call it “edgy,” I just call it REALLY annoying) and I miss the detail from the usual style. He already cut out a lot of the nutritional information and has lately just been hitting the highlights, which is a good overall change. Still, the previous style went through the cooking directions–which can be totally ridiculous–and he explored the taste and texture in a lot more detail.

If this new format were used for something in between a usual review and the “one word review,” it may be fine–IF there were fewer jarring awkward cuts (those really bother me). I would hate to see this be the new standard though.

I don't think the jump cuts work on this version. The style of show doesn't support jump cuts, plus they don't actually jump enough. If you are looking for a shorter show, try reducing the information you say. A single shot provides a better presentation for this type of show. The edits make me wonder what FFM witticisms I am missing. Really like the image of the nutritional facts.

I'll be the weirdo and say that I like the new format. Yes, you could reduce banter in the old format, but the banter is part of who the Frozen Food Master is. (but, uh, majority rules, right?)

Hi Everyone, thanks for your feedback. As you can imagine, after 200+ episodes I felt it was time for a facelift of the show. Most of you dislike it apparently. Some of you like it.

Let me first explain why I changed it and then I will discuss what the plans are to make it even better.

I love the dedicated viewers of my show. You guys are amazing! The last thing I want to do is alienate the fans who have made Freezerburns and the community around it so wonderful. But for every 1 person that watches the show day in and day out, there are hundreds who never make it past the first episode.

In fact, the number one criticism I get from occasional viewers is not the fact that I mispronounce things, or that I wear too much Red Sox apparel, it is that they are too long and too descriptive. Viewers tend to only have an attention span of around 5 minutes tops. Most of my episodes were clocking in at around 13 on average.

Thus, the move to a quicker format. Here's what I am going to try to do in the coming episodes. It will be an evolution as I firmly believe the show needs to evolve a bit to keep my interest level up and my traffic growing but I understand the criticism of the quick cuts being jarring.

I will continue to keep my episodes to under 6 minutes in length but will strive for longer clips giving all of you the details and first taste impressions you have come to enjoy. I will also, of course always be interested in honest feedback.

Hopefully we can evolve this to a perfect blend soon.

As always, thanks for your support and for watching Freezerburns.

Hey Greg. While the cuts were a bit on the frequent side, I do think you are moving in the right direction with this. Some cutting is needed to keep your times shorter. I know there are many times when I don’t make it all the way through an episode or I find myself jumping ahead.

As time goes by and you start getting a feel for where to cut and how to film so you can have longer consistent runs, people won’t notice as much and soon it will become the norm. It just needs some polish but I’m all for bringing the time down a bit on episodes.

Keep up the good work!

I’m an odd person out, too, I guess, but I like the new style. It was little bit too choppy, but like Chris said above, I definitely think you are moving in the right direction. I also really liked the nutritional info graphic. That was much better than having all the info read to us.

I’m looking forward to seeing more episodes in the new format!

okay, i understand that this is to appeal to the large masses by making shorter episodes. america’s attention span is shortening everyday, but what brings people to freezerburns and KEEPS them coming back is you. you could review birdseed (bad example, but it was the first thing that came to me) and as long as its your quirky, quick witted personality was there we would watch it.
I guess my point is, we are losing you in this new format. the food takes a back seat to what the frozen food master has to say about it.

I dug it! Loved the nutritional info graphic, that was sweet. I do like the feeling of one long cut, but I like the new format because I actually have time to watch it now. :)

I actually would love to hear more about the taste and less about the box. I know you’re a marketing guy and the box fascinates you, but I usually don’t even see what frozen stuff is called before I rip into the box and toss it in the trash. Heehee.

Great job! Can’t wait to see how this evolves.

I like watching the longer ones. Sometimes it feels like the reviews drag on a little, I felt that way watching some of your older ones, but for the most part I like the length. I just don’t care for the choppiness of this review. It made me a little disoriented. Maybe you could post the short edited version for those that like the quick reviews, and the longer unedited ones for those that like all the little details? I love watching you everyday and I love how consistent you are. Another blog I try to follow that reviews frozen food can be really hit or miss, but you’re here everyday with a brand new review for our viewing pleasure. Thanks Greg!

This episode was way too disjointed. I had a hard time getting into the episode because of all the cuts. Part of your charm is all the random stuff you seem to come up with on the spot, and that seems to be gone now.

But I do like the new opening and the nutritional facts!

Oh Greg I so wanted to like it. But it doesn’t have the heart and humor. It is way to hard to follow with it not flowing like it use to. You put so much work into this to just chop half of what you record out the window.
(sorry for posting so late, had a busy day)

Although now I will have “cock rings” stuck in my head the rest of the day.

I’m a recent reader of Freezerburns, so I’m going to refrain from commenting on the format change, b/c I’m not super familiar with the old one either.

As for the product itself?? My very first thought when I saw the box was “leave it to the Americans to come up with chicken rings”. I don’t mean to be inflammatory, but you have to admit that America probably has more novelty frozen foods per capita than any other country. So imagine my surprise when I discovered that these were a product of MY home country, Canada?!! For the record, I have never seen these in the stores and I’m in a pretty metropolitan area. Ah well, what can you do?

One other thing, calling these things anything OTHER than Cock Rings is just a waste of a perfect opportunity.

What the h*ll, I stop watching for a few weeks because I got a new job and have not had time, and this is the first episode I have watched, and my god, I love your show, I think your great, but your new format, looks like a 5 year old who is new to computers did the editing. Choppier than the ocean during a hurricane. I know people have commented that you should make your reviews shorter, which I sorta agree, but dayammmmm Out of 5 stars, I give your format 1/2 star.

Sorry for being so negative. Instead of chopping the h*ll out of your video like this, instead of giving all the nutrition details, just tell us what you dont like about it, if anything, you post the nutritional’s on your website for everyone to see. And keep the nutritional graphic on the video. I really liked that in the new format, and by including this you can cut out 30-45 seconds alone by reducing this.

What I would also suggest, since most of your videos came in at 13 minutes, gradually make them shorter, this will give you a way to tweak and make things better as they get shorter, Its like going from 55mph down to 20mph, then speeding up to 35, then down to 15, then up to 30, then down to 20 and so on. Your average video is 13 minutes, try to make your next one just under 9 minutes, then see what everyone thinks and then tweak the next one to get it under 7 minutes and 30 seconds, then the next one 6 minutes 30 seconds, then try to get it around 5 minutes. I really dont think cutting it down to 5 minutes will increase your viewership, but cutting down the time will def help some. I honestly think if you keep it less than 7 and a half to 8 minutes, it will be easier for your viewers to watch, and you will make new viewers happy, without alienating your dedicated fans.

I was going to stop this after saying 1/2 star but I wanted to make sure I gave you some positive feedback and suggestions. Didnt want to just trash the format and thats it.

Hope my rant makes sense!

One interesting side effect of the jump cuts is that it caused me to keep a closer eye on the elapsed time. I kept mentally thinking “Hurry up with the review already” when I saw how close to the end it was. This made me a little sad because I usually enjoy the pre-review banter.
