Episode 225: Caribbean Food Delights Jamaican Style Beef Patties

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

It is hard to ignore the brilliance of meat stuffed into pastry. It is an idea that is so universally recognized as being brilliant that I bet it has the power to end war and reunite Ace of Base. But just because it is an idea that begs the sounds of trumpeting angels and sparkly rainbows doesn’t necessarily mean it is executed in a way that is delicious for the Frozen Food Master. So it was with great hope and mild trepidation that I sunk my teeth into these little meat pillows: Caribbean Food Delights Jamaican Style Beef Patties. Would they make the Frozen Food Master Jammin’ or will they send him running for the chuck bucket?

Far and away the best part of Jamaica is Cool Runnings. A tremendous cinematic achievement. Second is the Kool Aid flavor “Jamaica”. Its a taste experience that everyone should have.

mmm jamaican jerked chicken!

in regards to the video editting this time, I liked the first cutscene for the how does it look cooked, but then I stopped liking it with the second cutscene for the lowdown. Feels too chopped up if that makes any sense, I’m so used to the whole long thing that I know when each part is coming already :D

Wow. Harshin’ on the patties, man… I think my hubs would disagree that they deserve the same rating as the Frosty Paws. In my personal opinion, even the patties sold at Jamaican restaurants aren’t that good. Maybe the “magic meat” is part of its charm… I don’t know. Either way, thanks for the review. I’ll be sure to redirect him if he suggests we buy this. That did look pretty nasty inside…

And my favorite part of Jamaica? Definitely the music, Mon!

I like this new format verses the previous “jerky” one. One suggestion, can you also add where you purchased items, if at a national chain, that is. Jamaican weather!

Greg,

You are not just the frozen food master, but the episode time reducing master now. Wow, BIG difference. Much better. As your comment about the taste, you wanted to turn off the camera to wash out your mouth, with your first new format episode, I wanted to stop the episode and hit the delete key. But now, great job! Very enjoyable.

I do have one suggestion for you. Twice in the past few episodes, you have used plates the same color as the food and commented that you should have used a different color plate. Greg, with the joys of this not being life, it being recorded and edited, what you could do in the future, is if you notice this. Put the plate down, grab another, transfer the food to the new plate, and start that segment over. It would take you 2-3 minutes to make the great plate switch, but in the mode of reducing time, if you did that, and reshot that scene, it would save you 5-10 seconds of time on your final video ;-)

I like cut scenes, much much better, I agree though some seemed a little out of place, not expetect, but as you do more episodes you will be able to get yourself use to this new format and can play around with it. The reason it seems a little choppy, is you are talking about the product and you expect to hear you say something else, but then you have a cutout.

Again much better. Love your show man!

Greg, first off love the show, love the blog. But, I gotta say a few things about the Jamaica Beef Patties, mon! First, you should have gone with the spicy beef, if you like a little heat, or maybe the chicken if that was an option. I admit they can be a bit bland, but toss it between a couple slices of bread and add a little mustard and you’ve got one of the greatest 2min snack outside of a hot pocket.

Keep up the awesomeness!

My favorite thing about Jamaica, the Rum and Cokes :)

Horrible, I hate beef; I’m ashamed to admit it, but I’m fussy with meats.
Awesome review, I LOVE the way you break it all up.
You are a legend!

This is much better than earlier in the week. I’ll have to get used to the little breaks, but I think I will. It seemed like the videos at the beginning of the week cut out the charm and character of the FFM, but I felt it in this video. Good job.

Ahh Jamaica!, reminds me of where they filmed the first James Bond film, Dr No…it also reminds me of Red Stripe Beer. Greg, I do believe you have got! I like the transitions and loved the review. Seriously when you peeled back that dough, it looked and probably tasted like Fancy Feast.

Great job landing on the new format. I agree with another Jeff above (imagine that) who said that as you get used to the segments, you will get a better sense of “playing with each segment.” There was one edit within a segment that was a bit disruptive is such a short segment, but I am extra sensitive to that.

Now that you have completely trashed your workflow with editing, you can add close-ups of the package and the food too. And if you use stills as B roll, it can save setup time.

By the way, I have always wanted dreadlocks so I could tuck them under one of those giant, knitted red, yellow and green hats.

Cricket is the best thing about the whole of the West Indies.

“Don’t like Jamaica – I LOVE her!” Name that tune (extra points for the band).

Greg, you must get this question a lot, but does your daily FreezerBurns dose of fat, salt, preservatives and mystery meat scare you at all?

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee yet. One of the best tasting ways of getting that morning caffeine fix… albeit far too expensive for every day, I have to admit.

Hmm… as brilliant as the *concept* of pastry-encased meat sounds, it certainly seems to fail you quite often in the realm of frozen foods, I’m sorry to say! Even before I watched this episode, I was remembering your video featuring the infamous Goya Pizza Empanada, and I had a feeling that this one couldn’t possibly end well! (Then again, did that Goya “empanada” have any actual meat in it, or just some scary cheese-like substance? I can’t recall for sure; I’ll have to watch it again.) Still a brilliant concept, of course; I’m not disputing that… however, it is a brilliant concept that can go horribly wrong unless it is put in the hands of an equally brilliant frozen food manufacturer… and this product *definitely* did not live up to that standard.

I wonder what makes this product qualify as “Jamaican” in the minds of the manufacturers…? Not that all Jamaican cuisine has to be drowned in jerk spice, of course… but I would think that at the very least, a minimal amount of *flavor* would be required…

I agree that the “Hostess Fruit Pie-esque” packaging is awesome… but couldn’t they have given equal attention to the actual taste of the product? What a disappointment.

I never had a Jamaican Beef patty until 2008. I had seen the commercials for Tower Isles Jamaican beef patties all my life and since my wife was prego I was free to eat whatever I wanted. I fired up one of them (Spicy) and really did not like the way the crust came out, however the meat was spicy enough that when my 8 1/2 month pregnant wife took a little bite, her water broke that night and out popped baby. So we joke that the Spicy Jamaican Beef patties cause women to go into labor.

Great video. I’m in NYC, and these patties are everywhere, right next to the pizzas in most pizza parlors. But they all mostly taste better than the Carribean Food Delights (CFD) brand. I bought a box of “mild” Tower Isle and a a box of CFD just to do a side-by-side. CFD’s meat tasted like old, “going-bad” beef. Not bad enough to hate, but def. not fresh/beefy tasting. Tower Isles meat filling is ok, but the flakiness of the pastry is too much. It’s like a baklava-with pieces flaking off everywhere. Today I chopped up cilantro and mixed it into the patty fillings of each. Not bad.

I actually like the CFD crust. However, the box of CFD/Tower Isle patties I bought are “bake-only” style, and do not contain individually packaged, microwaveable patties.

Anyhow, thanks for posting!

It's hard to mess up puff pastry. It is after all Pie dough that has being folded with layers of butter to make lots of little layers.

It's kinda sad that you did not enjoy them. Maybe they aren't meant to be frozen? I love these, in chicken and beef and it must be super hot with pepper.

What do I like about Jamaica? Probably just the jamaican patties. What i -don't- like is how everyone think that's the only island in the Caribbean. I even watched an american based children's cartoon that once stated that the steel pan…ehem.. “drums” came from jamaica! Can you get any more dense?

You gotta try the spicy ones! The mild ones are for people who can’t handle the spice. And you can also put them in the toaster oven. The crust comes out much better. This patty is the best out of all of the ones I’ve tried and comes close to or better than what I had in Jamaica! The company also does a lot of charitable work both here in the U.S. and in the Caribbean so please keep supporting them! They are doing a wonderful job!
