Episode 241: Smart Ones Stone-Fired Crust Pepperoni Pizza

Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master

Not quite sure how someone is suppose to believe a frozen food has been created by a true artisan especially for your belly. Maybe back in Renaissance times you would fall for something like that but in today’s time, you would be hard pressed to find someone who buys it. Still, Smart Ones decided to give this Smart Ones Stone-Fired Crust Pepperoni Pizza a “Artisan Creation” designation and from the looks of the picture on the box, I would say that it is certainly no ordinary pizza. But what will the Frozen Food Master think of its taste?

Hmm… when you look at your lunch, do you really *want* to be reminded of staring down the barrel of a gun? Ominous…

This looks decent enough (especially for a “diet” pizza), but I think Smart Ones certainly could have done better with this one. That crust left a lot to be desired, for one thing… additionally, they could easily have used a more flavorful sauce… and like you mentioned, where was the parsley? Not a major ingredient, to be sure, but herbs and spices can add a lot of flavor to a dish for virtually no extra calories, so if they had used more of that parsley (and perhaps other herbs) for flavor, and if they had put more effort into creating a better quality sauce… and had they actually delivered on their promise of a “stone-fired crust”… then they could have created quite a good pizza that could have really stood out among the other frozen microwaveable pizzas out there, even though this is a “diet” pizza. The biggest disappointment here is knowing that this *could* have been so much better, with what seems like so little extra effort on the manufacturers’ part. (Hey, it already has more than three pieces of not-spectacular-but-edible pepperoni on it, so it’s already overcome the biggest challenge of most “diet” frozen pizzas… how hard could it possibly be to put together a better quality crust and sauce?)

that pizza looked good as HELL. i can’t get over it. also i guess i don’t know about this chewiness you mentioned, because any pizza i’ve had that’s a bit ‘chewy’ in the middle was great. but i’m still going by the fact that it’s a diet pizza and it can’t possibly be great.

thanks for the entertaining review

I wonder if by “artisan” they mean “failed artist who now works on the factory line of a frozen food company.” ?

Hey FFM,

I bought the cheese version of this pizza yesterday since it was $1, so if figured to give it a shot. I completely agreed with everything you said about the pepperoni one, the sauce is generic, the cheese is ok, and the middle is chewy. My crust was not that crispy because I had to cook mine for an additional 2-3 minutes because the center was still cold.
