REVIEW: Lean Cuisine Thai-Style Chicken Was a Delicious “Mound of Sludge”
Posted by: Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master
First off this meal looked like a bloody mess. Fortunately for Lean Cuisine I care more about the taste than the looks. This Lean Cuisine Thai-Style Chicken meal has “grilled chicken tenderloins in a thai-style red pepper sauce with basil, soy & ginger, served with rice.” It is true that all of those things were in this meal. But a more accurate description would be this:
“Thai-style mound of sludge”
Not to say slush is a bad thing in this case. But let’s not have any strange misconceptions that this will look as elegant as it does on the box. The chicken was decent and the quantity ample. I did get a disgusting small piece of gristle in one of my bites. The sauce was spiced (not spicy) and the rice was quite lovely.
The microwaved directions called for 6 minutes on high with no stirring in between. What I got was a super hot thai-style burning agent with crusty rice on the outside. I used to call the rice that gets crispy on the side of the pan “popcorn rice”. And I used to like that. But there was so much sauce in this meal that I needed extra rice to mop it up and a crispy rice nest was not going to cut it.
Overall, the taste was good, the quantity was decent, and I was satisfied considering the $2.50 price tag.
